Abstract

As more and more breast imaging centers convert to full-field digital mammography, problems surrounding lack of system interoperability have come to light. Most medical facilities have a heterogeneous mix of different information systems that, if integrated properly, work together to provide practitioners with all the information necessary for patient care. In order for these systems to provide maximal operability and utility, the systems adhere to standards such as DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) and HL7 (Health Level 7) as well as conform to integration profiles developed by IHE (Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise). This paper is intended to introduce the reader to IHE and specifically how the problems of integrating full-field digital mammography are being solved using IHE.
