Abstract

Even before the end of the observational phase of the IGY—July 1958 through December 1958—it was apparent that analysis of the great body of accumulated data would require an extended period of time. Moreover, the continuation of many IGY programs during IGC‐59, and the numerous successor world‐wide geophysics and space‐science programs that have grown out of or gained stimulus from the IGY, are adding new dimensions to the over‐all geophysical picture. Accordingly, on recommendation of the American Geophysical Union, endorsed by the US National Committee for the IGY, and with support from the National Science Foundation, publication of the IGY Bulletin is being continued in order to complete the record of reports on results of IGY and IGY‐related studies. The original aim of the Bulletin was primarily to keep participating scientists informed of progress in the United States program and, to the extent possible in the limited space available, in the programs of other countries. During the first few months of publication, however, a large number of students, teachers and other interested persons asked to be permitted to subscribe to the Bulletin, and near the end of its first year of publication the Bulletin was accordingly made available on a subscription basis. (See back page of this issue for subscription information.)
