Abstract
A poster entitled Ignore AIDS and It Will Bury the Rest of You was designed to rally the public to take the AIDS outbreak seriously. The poster was created for the Oregon Health Division by Pihas Schmidt and Westerdahl in 1987 the image plays off the common saying about ostriches burying their heads in the sand and darkens it with the possibility of death. It portrays an endless succession of people reaching to the horizon hinting at the consequences of willful isolation and ignorance. The poster subtly carries messages at three levels: 1) it prompts individuals to take precautions against infection; 2) it promotes communal efforts to contain the outbreak; 3) it points to the need for research to battle the illness.
