Abstract

The present study examines a non-steady state model of a fluidized bed catalytic cracking regenerator. The aim is to show how the freeboard region (FBR) could cause the ignition of the regenerator. The analysis is based on a realistic model of a fluidized bed operating with similar conditions to those used in the industrial regenerator of Destileria La Plata, YPF, Argentina. The key importance of the FBR for regenerators of 1–2 meters total dense bed height, previously indicated by de Lasa and Grace (1979) is now confirmed with the unsteady state representation. The importance of the FBR on the dynamics of the regenerator is also demonstrated.
