Abstract

Various samples of rigid foam plastics used as thermal insulation were evaluated for resistance to ignition by radiant heat, using the screening test method developed at the University of San Francisco. The materials were phenolic, isocyanurate, and polystyrene rigid foams. None of the four samples exhibited flaming ignition at heat flux levels up to 10.5 W/cm2 in the absence of a pilot flame. The glowing combustion exhibited by the phenolic foam may be a potential hazard.
