Abstract

The following material is based on a more‐detailed report by Ned A. Ostenso of the Geophysical and Polar Research Center, Department of Geology, University of Wisconsin. The parent report, entitled Geophysical Investigations of the Arctic Ocean Basin, was published by the University of Wisconsin as Geophysical and Polar Research Center Research Report No. 62–4, June 1962.(Note: Many of the physical features discussed below are known by more than one name, but owing to space limitations only the names given preference in the original report are used here; the original version gives variants as well as the author's reasons for his preferences. Also, many of the ideas discussed below are attributed in the original report to various other investigators; here, owing to space limitations, many of the references to other sources are omitted.)
