Abstract

In 2008, Calvary Health Care ACT identified a group of “up and coming” emergency nurses who could benefit from a formalized program of study. Previously, their only option was to undertake a post graduate program in critical care nursing. Recognizing that emergency nursing is a unique specialty in critical care, we partnered with Australian Catholic University to offer a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing (Emergency) to our staff. Our goal was to enhance the student's professional practice by focusing on the medical and nursing management of emergency presentations and mastery of the essential skills and equipment unique to the emergency setting. We sought to offer the students a clear career pathway in emergency nursing utilising this program as a vehicle for their professional advancement. Additionally, we wanted to ensure that participation in the program resulted in minimal cost to the student and to the facility.
