Abstract

Abstract Groups of elementary school students were engaged in the process of textbook selection. Their discussions were tape-recorded, and the resulting data were analyzed with regard to the issues students raised as they reviewed specific books and discussed textbooks more generally. The objective of the study was an increased understanding of student experiences with the materials that have a substantial influence on curriculum and instruction in elementary classrooms. The results of the study indicate that children do not, as a group, share a comprehensive point of view about basal readers. Within schools and grades the students expressed diverse interests and attitudes which would make it unlikely that one textbook series could ever enjoy a strong advantage over all others if judged on the basis of student appeal.
