Abstract
Immunocompetent cells recognize antigens via their immunoglobulin (Ig) receptors. These receptor molecules are clonally restricted such that membrane-associated Ig on precursor lymphocytes share the same antigen-binding specificity as the antibodies secreted by their progeny (Ehrlich 1900; Julius and Herzenberg 1974). Furthermore, the Ig receptors and antibodies with the same epitope specificity share the same idiotype (Cosenza and Köhler 1972a). Thus idiotypes reflect the restriction of commitment of precursor cells, allowing the use of anti-idiotypic antibodies as functional probes for the regulation of clonal expression.
