Abstract

We read the recently published article by Alwanni et al 1 Alwanni N. Altay M.A. Baur D.A. Quereshy F.A. First bite syndrome after bilateral temporomandibular joint replacement: Case report. J Oral Maxillofac Surg. 2015; ([Epub ahead of print])http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.joms.2015.09.034 PubMed Google Scholar in which they reported a case of first bite syndrome (FBS) that developed after temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacement surgery. As discussed in the article, FBS is a recognized complication of surgery within the parapharyngeal space and other surgical procedures involving the upper neck. 1 Alwanni N. Altay M.A. Baur D.A. In addition, the authors report FBS associated with tumors of the parotid gland, submandibular gland, or parapharyngeal space. 1 Alwanni N. Altay M.A. Baur D.A. Quereshy F.A. In ReplyJournal of Oral and Maxillofacial SurgeryVol. 74Issue 5PreviewWe thank Dr Stoopler and colleagues for their insightful comments and also for sharing their experience with a possible case of first bite syndrome (FBS). We readily acknowledge the fact that the pathophysiological mechanisms and etiologic clues that were previously reported with the onset of FBS may not be the only factors that are involved in the pathogenesis of this condition. We also share the views of Stoopler et al that additional investigations are required to gain a more clear understanding of the pathophysiology of this disease. Full-Text PDF
