Abstract
Background: Results of experimental studies show that local anesthetics (LA), even in clinically applicable concentrations, cause more pronounced damage to the peripheral nerves in the presence of DM, with clinically observable changes in parameters of regional anesthesia. Attempts that are made to to minimize risk for LA – induced aggravation of preexisting neuropathy include reduction of the concentration and maximal dose of LA, as well as avoidance of epinephrine as a vasoconstrictor. Intraoral local anesthesia is considered to be more safe in comparison with local anesthesia in general surgery, considering the amount and concentration of LA and vasoconstrictors used.
