Abstract

Background: Depression occurs more frequently in individuals with diabetes compared to the general population. We know people with diabetes who develop depression can have a lower quality of life, impaired adherence to antihyperglycemic medications and self-management activities – leading to poor glycemic control, and a greater risk of diabetes-related complications. However, we do not have clear information on when this condition can develop in people initiating therapy for type 2 diabetes. Knowing when to start and who would benefit most from screening could help clinicians identify people at risk for developing depression.
