Abstract
Background: The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2019 was awarded for the discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. They showed that cell hypoxia provokes angiogenesis. Evolution developed mechanisms to ensure a sufficient supply of oxygen to live cells.
