Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes is a prevalent and costly chronic disease associated with many health complications. The prevalence of diabetes has increased worldwide; in 2019, an estimated 463 million adults had diabetes according to the International Diabetes Federation. The prevalence of diabetes in Hong Kong and China is 10.3% and 11.2% respectively. The economic cost burden of diabetes and related complications is substantial; in the US, Costs attributed to diabetes accounted for 57% of total health care expenditure incurred by people with diabetes in 2017 (USD 237 billion); accounting for 14% of all health care dollars.
