Abstract

Background: Salba-chia (Salvia hispanica L.) is a popular functional food containing high levels of protein, total dietary fibre, and an excellent source of α-linolenic acids. Previous studies indicate that consumption of chia seeds significantly decreases weight, suppresses appetite, and has a potential benefit in the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The objective of this study is to gather and critically appraise all available clinical evidence on the therapeutic effects of chia seed used as adjunct in the treatment of T2DM.
