Abstract

The author describes the main characteristics of Portuguese society of the sixties and the beginning of the eighties, comparing its educational policies. This paper includes discussion of a reactionary educational policy which, due to the ruling of an oppressing ideology, gives way to a participatory climate owing to the democratic ideal. It also describes how Portugal is a society that continues to be fostered by the prevailing desire for development and engagement, with directions toward integration in the European Union.
