is well on the road to consolidation, at least in the Western Zones. The considerable deficit in males is bound to deter wives from suing for divorce. Husbands, on the other hand, seem to be much less inclined than their American counterparts to desert their wives. Desertion constituted grounds for divorce in only about 6 percent of all divorces granted in 1947 in the British Zone of Occupation4' which includes a number of industrial cities.42 In the United States, however, desertion is estimated to account for about 33 percent of all divorces.43
