Abstract

3,4-DIMETHOXYPHENYLETHYLAMINE (DMPE) has been claimed to be present in the urines of many schizophrenic patients1–5. DMPE gives a pink spot on paper chromatograms developed first with ninhydrin and then treated with Ehrlich reagent (p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde)6. Others have assumed that pink spots found on chromatograms of the urines of schizophrenics are DMPE7–10.
