Abstract

Purpose: Hand pain is a common symptom in hand osteoarthritis (OA). Pain is not clearly associated with structural joint damage. Joint damage shows progression in hand OA, but previous cohort studies did not report an increase in mean pain levels on the short to midterm. This does not preclude the existence of groups of hand OA patients with different pain trajectories. Such groups have previously been found in knee OA patients. Knowledge of similar patient populations in hand OA may help guide pain treatment decisions.
