Abstract

Examining six books in an academic press series, this article identifies three methodological trends in Chicana/o art history: the centrality of biography and the voice of the artist, canon critique, and interdisciplinarity. Critical ethnic and feminist studies and other methodologies support the complex interpretation of artists' biographies as well as the critical lens that exposes limitations in the fields of art history and Chicana/o studies. These trends reinvigorate the scholarship on Chicana/o art and artists by exposing narrow analyses of ethnic-identified artists.
