Abstract

In ferrous systems the transformation from ferrite to austenite involves solid-phase nucleation of the stable phase along a pre-existing metastable grain boundaries. Analysis of the thermodynamics controlling phase selection are re-evaluated based on newly published results of atomistic simulations that quantify grain tilt-boundary surface energy. Nucleation does not occur until some critical misorientation develops through dislocation association such that the grain boundary becomes a potent nucleation site.
