Abstract

New methods for identifying distantly related proteins can be used to confirm sequence homology when only weak sequence similarity remains. These methods improve the selectivity of sequence comparison either by calculating the statistical significance of the most similar region, or by using consensus patterns rather than simple pairwise similarity scores.
