Abstract
JAMES S. TURNER is a partner in the law firm of SWANKIN & TURNER in Washington, D.C. During the period 1968-1971, Mr. Turner worked with Nader and supervised Nader studies on the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Mental Health and a study on children and the food industry. In 1970, be wrote The Chemical Feast, the Nader Report on the Food and Drug Administration (republished Penguin 1977). He co-authored Making Your Own Baby Food (Workman 1974, republished and revised 1977). Mr. Turner represents individual consumers, consumer groups and environmental groups in various matters concerning the consumer interest in food, drug and product safety law. He has participated in regulatory and legislative activity affecting the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Agriculture, National Institutes of Health, the Federal Trade Commission and other regulatory and administrative agencies. He has served as special counsel to the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs and the Senate Subcommittee on Government Reorganization and Government Research, and on advisory committees at the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Energy. He has also served as a consumer on the public policy committee of the supermarket industry, with regard to the development of electronic check-out systems. In addition Mr. Turner represents a number of federal employees in personnel actions to protect their rights as civil servants when they become critical of governmental policy. Mr. Turner has also worked to develop mechanisms for better interaction between consumer and business and government organizations. He has served as a member of the Board of the National Consumers League, the Council on Economic Priorities, the Food Safety Council, and as Chairman of the Consumer Liaison Panel of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences.
