Summary

Introduction

Construction activity is an integral part of a country’s infrastructure and industrial development. The Indian construction industry is one of the oldest and the second largest economic sector in the country next to agriculture providing large scale employment. Construction activity in India was confined to buildings and basic transportation infrastructure. The need for accelerated industrial, real estate, and infrastructure development laid the foundations for revitalizing architectural, engineering, and construction services. In this respect, the evolution of the Indian construction industry is similar to the general pattern in some other post-colonial economies. While initially driven by the government, private companies have gradually increased their share and contributions to the Indian construction industry.
