Abstract

Nonprofit volunteer organizations require leaders who apply a particular style of leadership, in accordance with the basic characteristics and values adopted by each organization. Applying the right leadership style affects the improvement of the performance of the organization and its members. This research is to identify leadership style applied by leaders of volunteer organization in East Java from member perspective, and to know member satisfaction index toward leadership style applied to volunteer organization in East Java. Data were collected by questionnaires distributed to members of volunteer organizations registered at The S ecretariat of V olunteers for D isaster R espon d, and willing to be respondents. The respondents of this study were 525 volunteers from 105 organizations. Data is processed using Microsoft Office Excel 10, and analyzed with Customer Satisfaction Index and Importance Performa n ce Analysis. The results show that the leadership style applied to volunteer organizations in East Java is the transactional and transformational leadership style. Transactional leadership style applied by organizational leaders in motivating their members related to basic needs of the physiological needs and safety needs, while the transformational leadership style applied by the leader of the organization in motivating members associated with self-esteem and self-actualization needs . Respondents generally feel very satisfied with the leadership style applied by the leaders of volunteer organizations. The results recommend certain characters that should be owned by leaders of volunteer organizations in East Java.
