Abstract
Does giving an identity to Europe mean rejecting Turkey ? The current discussion of the compatibility of Turkey with the European project continues to be a central subject in French politics and calls for a reflection on the nature of the debate and its ramifications for a European identity. It has been, above all, the discussions on the candidature of Turkey that have shown how difficult the relationship between identity and the outsider truly is : the possible presence of Turkey within the EU has provoked a heated debate on what the identity of Europe should be, at least within France.
