Abstract

Geomagnetic disturbances will induce GIC (Geomagnetically Induced Currents) in high voltage power grid. GIC can cause cascading failure in power system, resulting in power system collapse or blackouts. In this paper, the mechanism of cascading failure in power system under geomagnetic storm is analyzed, and a vulnerable link identification process based on brittleness theory of complex system under geomagnetic storms is proposed. The brittleness theory of complex system is used to identify the vulnerable link and cascading failure propagating process of power grid under the condition of geomagnetic storm. Finally, the proposed process is validated by using the IEEE-RTS79 system. The verification results show the validity and practicability of the proposed process. The obtained results can provide reference for quantifying and preventing the risk of power grid under geomagnetic storms.
