Abstract

Criminal offenses which have been recorded on video-surveillance systems often require verification of the identity of the persons involved and therefore call for personal identification based on facial or other somatic characters such as height and gait. Surveillance material can show robberies, murders, assaults, etc. In some countries, pictures from traffic cameras often have to be analyzed to identify the driver. In principle, each person can be distinguished from another by his or her external appearance. In forensic practice, the reliability of identification is dependent on the quality of the reference images and the frequencies of the identifiable features. This article describes the method of feature analysis as well as special aspects of identification such as 3D techniques, body-height determination, gait analysis, age determination, and further features on skin, hands, and genitals.
