Abstract

A combined autoradiographic and immunocytochemical study is conducted on the pituitary gland of intact female armadillos injected with [ 3H]estradiol. Uptake and retention of the steroid is observed in cells of the partes nervosa and distalis. By immunocytochemistry, it is found that 84.4% of the luteinizing hormone (LH) cells and 73.5% of the prolactin (PRL) cells are radiolabeled, while only a small percentage of growth hormone (GH) (7.2%) and thyrotrophin (TSH) (3.1%) cells sequester the tritiated hormone.
