Abstract

ABSTRACT In dairy cattle, even though both bulls and cows contribute to reproductive efficiency, the bull fertility has been given very less consideration as compared to females. Direct selection for the bull fertility traits is not effective due to its lower heritability. The present study was carried out with the objective of identifying genetic markers associated with bull fertility in PROP1 gene. The coding sequence of the PROP1 gene was sequenced and screened for variations. Only one synonymous SNP was found in the region. The SNP [T41207563C] was found to be significantly associated (P < 0.05) with conception rate in Sahiwal bulls. Bulls with genotype TT had higher conception rate and differed significantly from CC genotypes. These results suggest that the identified SNP can be used as a potential marker for fertility in Sahiwal bulls.
