Abstract

We identify a methoxide species on single-crystal Al(110) for the first time using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. This species is formed upon exposing the Al surface to methanol above 150 K. It is stable up to a temperature of about 500 K where it decomposes evolving hydrocarbons, leaving the surface in the initial stages of oxidation.
