Abstract

Leishmanial species can be typed by several methods1 including isoenzymes,2,3 nuclear or kinetoplast DNA hybridization,4,5 excreted factor serotypes6 and monoclonal antibodies.7,8 Identification of parasite species is Important in epidemiological studies and clinical treatment or follow up. Monoclonal antibodies now exist to several Old and New World species and subspecies of Leishmania. Using these antibodies, parasite typing can be carried out on small numbers of organisms by routine laboratory procedures. Species specific monoclonal antibodies to L. tropica are described which will complement existing L. donovani 9 and L. major 10 antibodies for the identification of Old World parasites.
