Abstract

Aircraft warning of icing is made by operational meteorologists by combining humidity data with temperature information. It is well known that such warnings frequently fail [14]. Improvement of icing warning could be obtained by using satellite data additionally to the conventional data. According to Hoffmann, cloud phase, liquid water content, temperature and drop size distribution are the cloud properties relevant for icing. In this paper, cloud top temperature and cloud phase, derived from NOAA AVHRR data are compared with synchronous airborne measurements to demonstrate that satellite data may be well suited to give relevant information on icing conditions which are not available from conventional data.
