Abstract

Time-of-flight telescopes with surface barrier detectors have been used in separating heavy ions with different energies down to 0.4 MeV/nucleon. Mass determination in the range A = 4–19 and for fission fragments has been performed by a correlated measurement of flight time and energy; in addition the information on nuclear charge was provided by the ΔE-signal. An overall time resolution of 100–400 ps fwhm was obtained with ultrathin 1.7–17 μm transmission detectors.
