Abstract

In this paper the method and the criteria for identifying the friction modes (states) of mechanical face seals by the fluid film load carrying ratio xf (the ratio of film pressure coefficient Km to loading factor Kg of mechanical face saels) and the specific film thickness λ (film thickness h to roughness δ ratio) are presented, For noncontacting hydrodynamic lubrication mode Xf = 1, for contacting lubrication mode xf = O and for contacting mixed lubrication mode 0<xf< 1. In association with specific film thickness the dry lubrication mode and boundary lubrication mode can be distinguished (for dry contact lubrication mode λ< 0.4 and for boundary lubrication mode 0.4<λ<1). On this basis the theoretical analysis of sael friction characteristic (friction coefficient f and duty parameter Gcurve — Stribeck curve) was discussed. Also the formulae for calculating friction coefficient by the fluid film load carrying ratio xf are derived and example of calculation was given. It is useful for seal design and application practice.
