Abstract

Aim. To determine drought resistance of winter bread wheat varieties and to select, on this basis, accessions - sources of high drought resistance for inclusion in breeding programs. Results and Discussion. The results of studying the drought resistance of winter bread wheat accessions in the northeastern forest-steppe of Ukraine in 2019-2021 are presented. Varieties with high drought resistance during the juvenile period were found: Krasa Laniv, Darynka Kyivska, Lira Odeska, Tobak, and Mavken. Varieties with high drought resistance during the generative period were also identified: Doskonala, Pryvablyva, Darynka Kyivska, and Dahmar. We distinguished accessions with above medium or medium drought resistance during the juvenile and generative periods: Zdobna and Tobak. There was a correlation between drought resistance during the juvenile and generative periods (r=0.73). The yield variation coefficient of the varieties ranged 17.1% to 51.0%. Accessions with moderate variation of the trait were selected: Mavken (17.1%) and Tobak (17.3%). Conclusions. We selected accessions combining high performance with sufficient drought resistance during the juvenile and generative periods: Doskonala, Pryvablyva, Zdobna, and Tobak. They can be used as sources of drought resistance in winter bread wheat breeding for adaptations to water deficit.
