Abstract

Three acidic substances which induced elongation of Avena coleoptile sections were detected in methanol extracts of immature sunflower seeds. The main active compound was isolated and identified as ethyl chlorogenate. The minor one was identified as indolyl-3-acetic acid by gas-liquid chromatography. Paper chromatographic behaviours of the former closely resemble that of the “acid fast auxin” reported by Guttenberg et al. to be contained in hypocotyls of sunflower. Both compounds are considered to be identical.
