Abstract

A tombusvirus was isolated in Crete from greenhouse‐grown eggplant showing leaf mottling and stunting. In the agar gel double diffusion test the isolate was readily differentiated from the type strain of tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) and other tombusviruses, including eggplant mottled crinkle and Moroccan pepper viruses which are known to cause diseases in eggplant. No spurs were observed, however, with the BS3 strain of TBSV and Peruvian and Tunesian TBSV isolates. Inspite of their apparent serological identity some of these BS3‐like isolates showed differences in host range and electrophoretic mobility.
