Abstract
The common bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris) chloroplast Bam 4 fragment has been cloned into pBR322 and partially (1698 bp) sequenced (EMBL accssion no. X68048). This sequence was found to contain several genes and pseudogenes which were identified by homology with liverwort, tobacco and rice chloroplast sequences. The gene order was as follows (from 5′ to 3′): psbA-ψ ndhA 3′ exon- trnH-ψORF 2136-ψ rpl 14-ψ rpl 16 3′ exon. This gene order is different from that described for pea ( Pisum sativum) and broad bean ( Vicia faba), which are also members of the legume family. This difference may be attributed to the extensive chloroplast DNA rearrangements which have occurred in these plants.
