Abstract

The ring oven, in conjunction with the reagent methylbenzothiazolinone hydrazone, has been used for the determination of chlorophenols in water. Four different methods were employed: aqueous in situ solvent extraction using a single and a mixed organic solvent, in situ total extraction of a mixture of ten phenols and in situ separation of binary phenol mixtures. These methods appear to be suitable for the determination of phenols in water with a detection limit of 2 × 10–5 mg l–1 for solvent extraction and 10–4 mg l–1 for the in situ methods, the detection limit being defined as the concentration for which no visible ring is formed for use at a lower limit on the standard scale.
