Abstract
Abstract The broad area of reaction kinetics is based on the application of polynomial and rational models. Estimating the parameters in such models one frequently encounters difficulties, certainly associated with structural or practical unidentifiability. Discussing both problems, the paper reviews result applicable to complex kinetic models and formulates some open problems. The main contribution to practical identifiability lies in a simple parameter transformation enabling one to find the determinable nonlinear parameter combinations via principal component analysis.
