Abstract
This entry provides an overview of the philosophy of religion in German idealism. The first section discusses the philosophy of religion in transcendental idealism, with an emphasis on Kant's and Fichte's conceptions of God. The second section considers the next major stage of idealist philosophy of religion, the absolute idealism of Schelling and Hegel, which seeks to surpass Kant and Fichte's morally oriented philosophy of religion. Finally, the third section briefly outlines the last major stage of this tradition, the late Schelling's metaphysical empiricism.
