Idealism and education in Nigeria

Abstract

This paper discusses the philosophy of idealism and considers the implications of the philosophy for education generally, and for education in Nigeria in particular. The method used in the discussion involves philosophical analyses which comprise logical, linguistic, expository and critical analyses. It was concluded that idealism asserts that ultimate reality is mind and spirit; and that knowledge involves coherence theory of truth. It was noted that values involve moral and spiritual development but without precluding survival values as are found in the sciences. It was also observed that the advanced nations encourage democratic values which promote real educational and national development. On the contrary, Nigeria emphasizes values in science and technology for educational and national development. These have been found not to promote educational and national development appreciably over the years. It is therefore recommended that Nigeria should appreciate thephilosophy of idealism, implement it in her educational policy and lay greater emphasis on moral and spiritual development in order to achieve sustainable development.
