Abstract

Short-term peripheral nerve block has recently gained popularity for anesthesia and pain management (Kirksey et al. 2015), but implantable devices are needed for long-term applications such as chronic pain, muscle spasticity, and dystonia. One promising method to block peripheral nerve conduction is direct current (DC) stimulation (Bhadra & Kilgore 2004). However, when delivered through traditional metal electrodes, DC stimulation can cause electrochemical reactions that generate toxic byproducts.
