Abstract
In general, ID fan foundation consists of a block/semi-framed foundation with heavy concrete mass. Majority of the engineering practitioners study its dynamic behavior using Barkan’s method. However, in this study a three-dimensional finite element model is used to study its dynamic behavior. ANSYS software is used for modeling the foundation with three-dimensional finite elements. Appropriate soil structure interaction is resembled with suitable elements available in ANSYS element library. Natural frequencies of the foundation system and displacement amplitudes are obtained using the above model. Mode shapes of the various modes are plotted. Foundation response for equipment start-up and shut down conditions are studied by plotting displacement amplitudes with respect to frequency variation.
