Abstract

Malignant biliary obstruction is a common complication seen in patients with advanced carcinomas, especially those of pancreatobiliary origin. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram (ERCP) with sphincterotomy and metal biliary stent placement remains the treatment of choice for un-resectable malignant biliary obstruction. Short term complications of biliary stents, such as stent obstruction, migration, or pancreatitis, have been well described. With the increasing effectiveness of new adjuvant systemic therapies, the life expectancy of these patients have increased. As such, the aim of this study was to examine the late complications seen in patients with long term metal biliary stents.
