Abstract

MR guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a minimally invasive and emerging technology that has three main neurosurgical applications including ablation, blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability, and neuromodulation. High intensity MRgFUS uses thermal energy to create a permanent lesion in the ventralis intermedius (VIM). While this is a favorable intervention for patients who may not be surgically fit for more invasive options, not every patient is a candidate. Skull density ratio (SDR) is a measure of the ratio between cortical versus cancellus bone making up the skull. This measurement is important as skull density can prevent the transmission of sufficient ultrasound energy needed to create a permanent lesion. This abstract focuses on the incidence of exclusion for patients interested in MRgFUS as a treatment modality for treatment of tremor due to skull density ratio (SDR)alone.
