Abstract

Chronic pain resulting from injury to the lumbar disc is often vaguely described as “axial low back pain” (ALBP). ALBP implies a vertical pain surrounding the axial spine, however patients with true ALBP often have pain that is reproducible on exam with either percussion and/or direct pressure. In addition, in our experience, patients with complaints of Horizontal LBP (HLBP) appear to have consistent radiological evidence of lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD) and/or injury. Moreover, HLBP putatively exhibits a referred pain-pattern associated with lumbar disc pathology. Here, we describe a single-site, observational analysis of patients diagnosed with horizontal, low back pain (LBP) with radiographically-confirmed lumbar DDD who were treated using Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS).
