Abstract

Baclofen withdrawal is a life-threatening issue that has been demonstrated in patients with intrathecal baclofen use with catheter-related dysfunction. Prior to 2012, Medtronic baclofen pumps used traditional silicone catheters. In 2012, Medtronic introduced a new coated catheter designed to increase catheter strength and reduce kinking and occlusions. According to a 2016 review comparing traditional silicone catheters vs the coated catheter in children, 18% compared with 1.1% had catheter-related complications in the traditional and coated catheter groups respectively1. According to a 2020 Product Performance Report, there were 700 catheter-related events out of 5475 catheters (12.79%) and 277 events out of 2779 catheters (9.97%) in the old and new catheter models, respectively2.
