Abstract
AbstractThis chapter explores the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to protect and address some environmental problems to progress toward sustainable development. Top-down approaches emphasize global climate change, while bottom-up approaches give importance to vulnerability assessments of particular ecological, economic, and social systems as a planning tool. Thus, ICTs can aid individuals in adapting to climate change by using both top-down and bottom-up approaches. Information technology can assist the adaptation to climate change, conserve biodiversity and ecosystem, help natural disaster management, and preserve natural resources such as land, water, and forest resources. Additionally, ICTs applications can bring about urban development by building a Smart or Digital City. The application of ICTs can be an operative tool to reduce the risk and allow better adaptation and management of resources.
